"I'd rather have Jesus than silver or gold ... "
"King
Solomon was greater in riches and wisdom than all the other kings of
the earth. The whole world sought audience with Solomon to hear the
wisdom God had put in his heart. Year after year, everyone who came
brought a gift – articles of silver and gold, robes, weapons and spices,
and horses and mules." (1 Kings 10:23-25).
" Praise be to the Lord
your God, who has delighted in you and placed you on the throne of
Israel. Because of the Lord’s eternal love for Israel, he has made you
king to maintain justice and righteousness." (1 Kings 10:9).
We
read about King Solomon. We read about His great riches. We read about
his great wisdom. We learn that he had been greatly blessed by God. What
are we to say about Solomon?
We could focus on the spiritual side - "the wisdom God had put in his heart", "the Lord your God ... has delighted in you."
We
should also note the temptation that comes to those who have great
riches. Things can become more important to us than they should be. We
must pray that the Lord will always be more important to us than the
things of this world.
"I'd rather have Jesus than silver or gold;
I’d rather be His than have riches untold;
I’d rather have Jesus than houses or lands;
I’d rather be led by His nail-pierced hand."
